Valentine Cole

6 August 2008

Freetown — This year's 20 International Congress of Zoology taking place at the University Pierre & Marie Curie in Paris between August 26 and 29, 2008 would bring many countries both from the developed and developing world together.

Held every four years, the Congress gives zoologists and professionals from all fields related to zoology the chance to come together to discuss the current status of zoology and to share ideas about future development of all its disciplines.

The congress would be held at Jussieu Grand Campus and would be co-hosted by the Universities Pierre et Marie Curie (PVI), Paris-Sud (PXI) and the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle.

The topic that would feature prominently in the congress includes contemporary approaches in systematic Zoology, worldwide approaches of animal diversity, paleozoology and comparative anatomy; exceptional conservations, evolution and development, genes, individuals, societies; current trends in social insects, ecology from individuals to populations, species dwellings and global changes, marine organisms and symbiotic systems in extreme media, biodiversity and ecology of protests, genomics and cell biology of protests, sex differentiation in vertebrates and wild life conservation methodology.

The congress which would also focus on methodology in the handling of animals would bring to fore the most modern practices in Zoology.

As Zoos are gradually fading out in favour of wild life parks and games reserve, Sierra Leone would benefit immensely from her participation in this era of trying to focus on eco-tourism.

Presently there are few wild parks in Sierra Leone and the Chimpanzee sanctuary at Tacugama around Regent is the most prominent. There is Otumba Kilimi in the northern part of the country and the Tiwai Island in the southern part.

Multi system and eco conservative company is presently behind Sierra Leone's participation in this congress. According to the national coordinator Mr Mike Momoh at a news conference in their Main Motor Road office, a senior research officer by the name of Kelvin Coker would attend the congress with a view to bringing back accumulated knowledge acquired for the development and preservation of modern wild life parks in the country.

The company, which is a member of the conservative society, is presently at the forefront of trying to revive, develop and create new parks and games reserve in the country.

The company's participation in this yearly event would help to strengthen the country's ability in conservation while exposing it to international standards in the treatment, handling and preservation of games and wild life in Sierra Leone.

"We are currently planning to host the International Congress of Zoology within the next 5 years as preparations are already in advance," Mr Momoh said.
