Angola: Police Step Up Call for Illegal Firearms Surrender

6 August 2008

Luanda — The National Police have called on citizens in possession of illegal firearms to voluntary surrender all lethal material out of the institutional control.

The appeal was made Wednesday in Luanda by Police commissioner Paulo Gaspar de Almeida at the opening of the meeting that gathers provincial officials and directors of the Public Order of local commands, taking place at the facilities of Police Unit, in Luanda.

The participants at the meeting are assessing the organizational and functioning condition of the provincial technical sub-commissions, as well as the execution and the fulfilment of the action programme of the government, in all localities.

To Paulo de Almeida, although the results of the previous phases of collecting firearms were positive, there is no conviction that all have handed over their weapons they possess illegally.

"Now we have already reached the compulsory phase, an action that should not be regarded as violent or offensive to the fundamental human rights, noted the police officer, who added that those who fail to abide by the appeals and, be found in possession of illegal firearms will be charged with crime.

The participants' agenda includes the assessment of sensitising work, advertisement and the engagement of activists, with view to find practical solutions for the speeding up of the process.
