The Uganda People's Defence Forces on Monday killed 10 Karimojong warriors of the Jie ethnicity in Kapedo, Kaabong District. The UPDF Third Division spokesman, Capt. Henry Obbo, said the warriors were killed in a battle which ensued when the Army rescued 25 Sudanese traders who the warriors had ambushed.

He said the Sudanese traders from the Dinka tribe in eastern Equatorial State of South Sudan, were trekking to Kaabong when they fell in an ambush set by the Jie warriors.

"The Sudanese traders walk over 200kms from Sudan to buy basic necessities from Uganda. Our troops at the 65th Battalion in Kaabong on that day responded very fast and rescued the Sudanese," Mr Obbo said.

He said the UPDF has embarked on regular deployment along main roads leading to the Uganda-Sudan border on market days in Karamoja to provide safety for the Sudanese traders.

The Kaabong RDC, Mr Geoffrey Kiwanda, said the warriors are believed to be part of a notorious group of cattle rustlers who the UPDF has been pursuing in the region.

"Security is now very tight for the warriors and there is almost nothing for them to raid. They have turned on innocent road users," Mr Kiwanda said.
