Amuru district has given internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Anaka sub-county 75 head of cattle as part of their resettlement package.

Cattle worth sh50m was handed over on Saturday to 75 beneficiaries from Paduny, Pangora, and Pabali parishes.

Bought under the Government restocking programme, the cattle was handed over by the district vice-chairman, Patrick Okello Oryema.

He clarified that the offer was not compensation for animals lost during the insurgency but support to enhance resettlement.

"The district saw that cattle was among the things you needed to take back home," he said.

"You should keep the animals well. Stop thinking it is the property of the local government or the NRM," Okello advised.

Okello also told the beneficiaries to follow the guidelines of the programme, where after delivery, calves should be passed on to other people.

He urged the parish restocking committees to oversee the redistribution of calves and monitor the health of the animals.

"Be close to the veterinary doctors and report any sign of disease so that you get immediate help. It will be terrible to hear the animals have died of treatable diseases."

Kalvin Okot, 45, one of the beneficiaries, was overjoyed and thanked the Government for the offer.

"All my life, I didn't dream that I would own a cow. Given the conditions in the camp, there is no way I would have got it on my own," he said.
