The Kaduna State Government has released N22 million to support the implementation of Commercial Agricultural Development Project (CADP) in the state.

Gov. Namadi Sambo said this in Kaduna during a meeting with the CADP appraisal mission.

He said that the money was in addition to the N20 million counterpart fund already paid by government for the project.

He said that his administration was interested in the project because the state had enormous potential to improve agricultural productivity.

Sambo said that implementation of the project in the state, would also encourage farmers adapt to modern farming techniques and have access to farm inputs.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Patrick Yakowa, said that the state chose fruit trees and dairy production as the two products the project would focus on due to their comparative advantage in the state.

He urged other states participating in the project to give it the necessary co-operation to ensure its success.

Earlier, Mr Lucas Akapa, Head, CADP task team, said that the World Bank introduced commercial agriculture in the country "because the performance of agriculture in Nigeria had been mixed."

He listed the lack of investment in new technology, slow adaptation of technology and dearth of infrastructure as some factors that negatively impacted on the development of agriculture in the country.

According to him, the project would also improve access to markets, capacity building and facilitate the linkage of small and medium scale commercial farms to financial services providers.

He said that it would also enable the country attain the agricultural growth rate target of 7-8 per cent per annum specified by the NEEDS, SEEDS and the 7-point agenda of President Umaru Yar'Adua.
