The Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro yesterday in Abuja, assured Nigerians that there is safety of life and property, as has been attested to by most diplomats.
Okiro said that the Nigeria police force was doing all that is humanly possible to ensure safety of life and property in the country, adding that this is yielding the desired result as is reflected in his numerous press briefings on successes in crime prevention, detection and control.
The police boss revealed that this reality has been expressed by Ambassadors and Diplomats, particularly by Israeli Ambassador, Papel Nuncio, who attested to the fact that the country was safe and secure.
Okiro, therefore, reiterated that every part of Nigeria, particularly Abuja, the seat of government is quite safe, saying that all Nigerians and foreigners alike are advised to go about their lawful business without fear of hindrance.
Meanwhile, the inspector general of police lauds the police service commission, just as he said its demotion of the 140 police officers was a constructive action that would bring sanity back to the police force.
According to Okiro, "Those police officers who felt marginalised will be compelled to put their best in order to earn their regular promotion".
Okiro, who made his position on the demotion exercise known to newsmen, noted that the police service commission had the powers to appoint, promote, demote, discipline and dismiss any police officer between the ranks of constable to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
The police boss agreed with the police service commission that the officers ought to be demoted "Because their promotions were irregular and done without regard for due process and the law guiding such exercise".
The PSC had on Tuesday announced the demotion of the 140 senior police officers including former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, whose rank was slashed from assistant inspector general of police to deputy commissioner of police.
A former Force Public Relations Officer, late Mr. Haz Iwendi, who was until his death on May 5, 2008, the Commissioner, Kaduna State police command was also demoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Meanwhile, some police senior officers who opted for anonymity while speaking to LEADERSHIP on the demotion exercise, hailed the PSC for taking such an action even as they maintained that the promotion by the former IGP, Sunday Ehindero, was done in bad fate.
"We were demoralised by that promotion because I couldn't imagine that those I was far ahead of in rank were just promoted overnight to become my seniors", an assistant commissioner of police said.

A deputy commissioner of police at the force headquarters said, "It was done by Ehindero who favoured only his people. He promoted people he used as his lackeys to perpetrate financial crimes"..
