Cameroon: Yaounde Goes Green - Government yesterday signed an agreement with authorities of the City council.

The Yaounde City council yesterday joined the bandwagon in the fight against climate change launched by the Prime Minister, Head of government in Maroua in 2006 and fostered by the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife. An agreement was signed to that effect at the city hall between the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Elvis Ngolle Ngolle and the Deputy Government Delegate to the Yaounde City council, Rose Zanguele.

The signing comes after the launching of the tree planting exercise in Kousserie, Maroua and Garoua. The whole programme sets out to plant trees in the northern part of the country to stop the advancing desert and in the southern section of the country to ensure that the forest cover remains rich and intact.

"Cameroon, as a State, has taken the engagement to bring its contribution to the global problem of climate change", Elvis Ngolle Ngolle said. The solution of the global problem, he said, passes through tree planting. The national reforestation plan, he said, was in ffect drawn up in 2001 and it sets out to plant tree on one to 15,000 hectares annually. "After the launching in 2006, it is now time for action and we are in action", Ngolle Ngolle said. Over 1.2 million trees will be planted in 2008 in all the towns of Cameroon.

The agreement signed yesterday, will enable authorities of the city council in collaboration with other partners, to plant over 110,000 new trees in Yaounde. While thanking common initiative groups, NGOs, tree nursery producers and other actors who have so far promoted tree planting in Cameroon, Minister Ngolle Ngolle called on the national and international community to ensure the success of the tree planting programme.

The signing ceremony was followed by the planting of trees below theYaounde Municipal Lake.
