Following the report of new cases of Avian Influenza alsoknown as Bird Flu in some states in Northern Nigeria, the Avain Influenza Project in Nasarawa State has started disinfection of poultry farms across the state.

The Nasarawa State Project Desk Officer, Mallam Tanko Abubakar, told reporters in Lafia yesterday, that even though there are no reported cases of Bird Flu in the state, the aim of the disinfection project is meant to prevent re-occurrence.

Abubakar, who stated this shortly after a disinfection exercise at Kayarda Village,to curb an outbreak that was reported last in 2006 and prevent reoccurence.

He said disinfection of live bird markets and poultry farms is one of the important strategies adopted to prevent spread of the virus and expressed his appreciation to the Village head and his people for actively supporting the exercise.
