Namibia: Omusati Takes Lead in Getting to Grip With Climate Change

Absalom Shigwedha

7 August 2008

CONCERNED about the predicted negative impact that climate change will have on the environment, the Omusati Region has established a Climate Change Adaptation Committee.

Paavo Amunyela, a member of the committee, says it will look at combating veld fires, which destroy a lot grazing and trees in the region.

The committee will also look at the sustainable use of thatching grass and collect baseline data for climate change adaptation in the region.

Government has said Namibia is vulnerable to climate change because of an over-dependence on rain-fed agriculture and its arid environment.

A study done by the University of Namibia last year said climate change could cause the country's agricultural production to drop by 13 per cent.
