Cameroon: North West - New Manager for Kumbo Water Authority

Peter Adi Fonte

8 August 2008

One of the pioneer workers of the Kumbo Water Authority, Justin Shiyntum Njoka, has been installed as the third Manager of that establishment. The commissioning exercise that took place in the Nso Palace last recently was presided over by the Mayor of the Kumbo Council, Donatus Njong Fonyuy.

Speaking at the occasion Mr. Njong congratulated the population of Kumbo Municipality for being reasonable to accept the new status of KWA. Mr. Njong called on Shiyntum not to be a person who only does routine office duty but an individual who should make things to happen. He added that if he sits in the office for routine work the water system would collapse. He promised to invite the General Manager of Feicom to visit the KWA Project so as to look for possible ways of assisting it.

The Chairman of KWA Tav Lailam Edward, a one time captain of the defunct Kumbo Strikers First Division Football team in his speech complained that the cost of water scheme is very high, people are not paying their water bills promptly as well as a lot of water theft and some people willfully destroy water connections. Mr. Lailam said the putting in place of a new status of the water has ushered in a new era which places responsibilities to all of us. He said each and everyone must participate to the growth of KWA. "We must put in place new plans which will discourage our detractors and bring meaningful change in the affairs of the water", Lailam said. He complained of farmers who have invaded the watershed, tilled soil into the spring banks, cultivate crops right into the spring sources as well as growing eucalyptus around water ways and sources.

Mr. Richard Denham a Canadian water Engineer who presented a paper on code of behaviour for the Kumbo Water Authority spelt out the code the employees and management of KWA have agreed to abide to. Henceforth the customer has to sign an agreement with KWA before connecting water. He hinted that the income of CFA 60 to 65 million that KWA raises annually cannot sustain its operations. He said measures be taken to sustain the life of the water so that between 30 years and forty years KWA should not be looking for money amounting to CFA 2.5 billion to salvage the water project from total collapse. He said the asbestos pipes of the project which are old cannot harm those who drink water from them.
