Zimbabwe: Econet Releases More Lines

ECONET Wireless, the country's largest mobile cellular operator, has increased the number of connected lines on its network to 870,000, cementing its dominance on the local market.

Douglas Mboweni, the company's CEO said Econet released 220,000 additional lines after increasing the capacity of its pre-paid system to take the stock of its connected lines beyond 654 000.

He said: "Our attention is now being focused on completing the next phase of expansion, which will take the company's subscriber capacity to 1.3 million by the end of November this year."

Going forward, Econet is hoping to release 400,000 new lines as part of the next phase of its expansion programme.

Ericsson, the Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer, is providing equipment to expand its core network made up of the switching systems, Intelligent Network platforms, prepaid systems, as well as new base stations in Harare, Mashonaland and Manicaland.

ZTE of China is supplying radio base stations for the southern parts of the country, covering areas such as Bulawayo urban and its environs, Masvingo, Midlands, and the Matabeleland provinces. The Chinese company will also build new sites in remote rural areas as well as along the national highways.
