THE main opposition party Congress of Democrats (CoD) has finally decided on a date for its extraordinary congress to elect a new leadership, abiding by a High Court ruling of last month which ordered it to call a new congress before year-end.
A meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) last weekend resolved to set the congress for October 24 to 26.
The party's activities had been paralysed following a controversial leadership congress in Keetmanshoop held in May 2007, when half of the delegates walked out, claiming irregular election proceedings and vote rigging.
The faction under party president Ben Ulenga expelled several prominent members, who took the matter to the courts, winning a victory on July 17, with Judge Louis Muller ordering the party to reinstate them as party members, to establish the party leadership as it was before the Keetmanshoop congress and to set up an electoral commission.
According to a press statement issued this week, the NEC considered appealing the High Court order, but then decided against it.
According to the statement, a member of the CoD youth wing, Kalimbo Iipumbu, was still a member of the NEC after his suspension period for alleged misconduct lapsed without a disciplinary hearing taking place.
Although ousted CoD Chief Whip Nora Schimming-Chase was reinstated as party member and vice president as per the court order, she was not put back into her position as chief whip.

According to party spokesperson Natji Tjirera, Tsudao Gurirab, who was made chief ship after Schimming-Chase was expelled, will retain this post.
