Giovanni Rector and Ashley Opperman have both failed to secure contracts with Iceland club ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar.
This was disclosed to KickOff.com by the club's South African-born assistant coach Renaldo Christians.
"The club felt that the duo lacked fitness and also lacked the technical skill to play at this level. We thank both of them for coming out on trial with us, but we believe the level is higher that they expected.
"It is regrettable that these were the first examples of South African footballers in Iceland, but we hope to bring in further talent from South Africa after our pre-season tour of Cape Town next year."
Christians also said that the players struggled to settle in Iceland.
