Ghana: Still On Electoral Violence - an Explosive Mix

9 August 2008

Yesterday ADM continued with its series of articles and commentaries on the "violence" and "intimidation" Ghana's two main political parties, NDC and NPP have been complaining of in the current registration exercise.

We do not intend to single one party out for berating but we also feel we will be reneging on our duty to God and country if we do not point out some of the signposts in this ominous development.

Over the past few months, NDC founder and leader, ex-Flt. Lt. Rawlings has been going on about how the NPP rigged the last elections. His party has picked up the refrain and promised not to sit idly by and allow the NPP to rig Election 2008. In fact the NDC claims to have evidence of NPP plans to rig the elections.

We also have heard NPP insiders say that they cannot afford to lose these elections. Losing, they say is not on their cards, because a loss could mean a long time in opposition again.

Indeed, they say the improving economy and discovery of oil in commercial quantities mean that the party which would be victorious in the December elections would remain in power for a long, long, time! Some element of desperation has crept in.

Here we are, therefore, with the NDC already deciding that the elections are going to be rigged by the ruling party and the NPP also quite determined that it cannot afford to lose the elections. What we have is an explosive mix which a little spark can ignite.

In 1992 when the NPP felt cheated, Ghana did not burn. The party actually resorted to the benign protest of writing a book chronicling a series of events which it said showed how the elections were rigged.

The leaders of the then opposition made up of NPP, PHP, NIC and PNC steadfastly refused to allow their supporters to visit any mayhem and Ghana was saved as a result. We have since gone through elections in 1996, 2000, and 2004 without burning our country down.

The current crop of party leaders owe to God and country the same responsibility of taking us through free, fair, safe and credible elections. Ghana and the world are watching and listening to who is doing and saying what in the current process...
