Ghana: GFA Settles On Eastern European

11 August 2008

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) says it will name an 'Eastern European' as new head coach for the Black Stars by close of day on Tuesday.

GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe says the association is close to wrapping up a deal that will bring an end to one of the lengthiest searches for a coach in Ghana football history.

The story of the GFA's search for a long-term successor for Claude LeRoy has been one of missed targets and endless media speculation. But Pappoe says the man the GFA will name will not be one of the names that has dominated media circles in the last week.

"The new coach will be from Eastern Europe," was all Pappoe would say. "In principle, we have come to an agreement and should make an announcement after sorting out a few areas."

The mention of Eastern European by Pappoe means the new man will not be French goalscoring great Jean-Pierre Papin, or the German Volcker Finke, who met GFA officials last week.

The GFA has gone through many names, but just when they thought they had found their man in Josef Hickersberger, the Austrian's demand of at least US$60 000 as monthly salary wrecked the deal.

Pappoe says the GFA has negotiated a deal that will pay the new man more than the 30 000 Euro a month that Claude LeRoy received, but insists it will not be anything close to the figures that scared them off with the Austrian.

Ghana has a friendly on August 20, with Tanzania claiming they are the opponents, before travelling to Tripoli for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Libya on September 5.
