SSNIT educates employers The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has organized a one-day workshop for schedule members, on the Employer Member Account Reconciliation (EMAR), at Konongo in the Asante Akim North Municipality.
Mr. Daniel King Kwablah, Deputy Ashanti Regional Area Manager of the Trust, stressed the need for every employer to register all workers in an establishment, whether they are employed permanently or temporarily as required by law.
Mr. Kwablah mentioned the main challenges confronting the company as being incomplete data, accumulation of arrears, and the delay in the payment of contributions by employers, on behalf of employees.
He also stated that SSNIT was confronted with the mentioned problems, because of lack of communication between employers and the SSNIT, and urged employers to submit reports annually, and pay their workers' contributions promptly, as they become due.
He further urged employers to make regular monthly contributions, on behalf of the workers to SSNIT, with correct particulars, including Social Security numbers, and the amount each worker was contributing.
The Acting Deputy Manager of SSNIT, for the Asante Akim North Municipality, Mrs. Ivy Zormelo, assured employees of the prompt payment of their contributions, if they submitted their documents early for processing, before they go on retirement.
She advised both employers and employees, to pay regular visits to SSNIT offices, to ratify mistakes while in service, and make sure they qualify as SSNIT pensioners, by contributing for 240 months before submitting claims for pension.
Mrs. Zormelo stated that any employer, who failed to pay the workers' contributions within the prescribed period, shall pay a penalty equal to 3% of the amount unpaid month, and as a penalty for the unpaid contribution.
Madam Dorcas P. Williams, Programme Co-ordinator, advised employers to notify SSNIT about any changes in the records of employees.
Mad. Williams mentioned the new pension scheme, yet to be implemented by the government, as very important, and asked workers to work hard to ensure national development.
She finally advised the participants to avoid double registration, saying ignorance of the law is not excuse for breaking it.
