Dear Kwami
Sometime this morning, I am told they would be hitting the streets of Accra to protest the sale of some government shares of GT to Vodafone.
I have heard and read arguments for and against the GT/Vodafone deal and so today's demo comes to me as something of an overkill. An overkill, from individuals and organizations who have had their stomachs filled to bursting with the goodies of democracy and tolerance.
But there can also be too much of a good thing. It is what we often refer to as over indulgence and if it was food, we would say gluttony!
The exercise of democratic rights is all well and good but the same rights also give elected officials the right to take decisions - good decisions - to the benefit of all of us. But who decides on what is good or bad?
No decision can satisfy ALL of us, that is why in a democracy, we are all allowed our right to express our opinions while at the same time allowing elected officials the right to weigh all that they have heard and take the final decision.
The GT/Vodafone deal is before parliament, indeed, some CPP politicians have even sent it to court. In the end, the buck will have to stop somewhere.
That somewhere is the elected government of the sovereign state of Ghana. Period! I hope the government would take its responsibilities and powers seriously and do the right thing.
