Ministry of health and sanitation Friday unveiled the district health information system, a strategy to systematically collect and analyze data from peripheral health units nationwide.

The system would process data on health activities including immunization, malaria control and HIV prevention.

Minister of health and sanitation, Dr. Soccoh Kabia said one of the challenges facing the health sector in the country for the past ten years was the lack of accurate data for monitoring health programmes which was as a result of many parallel and uncoordinated data collection system within the health sector.

He said the data processing would help other partners to get first hand information about the health situation in the country.

"I am pleased to announce the milestone of the revitalized district health information system. The system is well structured to produce information on key indicators of public health performance which can be used by decision makers and leaders in chiefdoms, district offices and at national level," he said.

The system, he said, would enable health workers at community level to ensure better healthcare delivery service by monitoring and taking appropriate actions.

Dr. Kabia maintained that after the installation of the system in the Western Area, Kono, Bombali and Moyamba districts, it would be extended to other parts of the country.

"I want to commend the Health Metric Network, World Bank and World Health Organization for supporting the development of the system in the country.
