Certificates of affiliation have been presented to new members to officially introduce them into the Ghana Trades Union Congress.
The new members are Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Makola Traders Association, Madina Trades Union and the Ghana Union of Physically Disabled Workers.
Speaking at the induction ceremony, the Acting Secretary-General of T.U.C, Mr. Kofi Asamoah said the occasion was a major significance because it marks the achievement of a major objective of one of the Medium Term Policy of T.U.C.
He said the one of the major policies was the extension of coverage to the informal sector and ensuring the application of minimum labour standards.
Mr. Asamoah disclosed that T. U.C has adopted a three year strategic plan ( 2008-2010) which covers education, training, policy, research, organizational development, restructuring, organizing and international affairs.
According to him the strategic plan seeks to professionalize their operations, reach out and maintain constant touch with members in order to provide services more efficiently and effectively.
He advised members to take urgent steps to join the Social Security Scheme in order for them to have income security during their old ages.
He revealed that there is a bill currently before parliament awaiting passage to introduce a contributory 3-tier Pension Scheme with adequate provisions to cover operations in the informal sector that constitute about 80 per cent of the working class.
"We look forward to the passage of the National Pension Bill as soon as practicable to provide the necessary legal framework on Pensions for all working people without exception and ensure social protection for all," he said.
