Ghanaian experts in special education, and other specialities, have held a two-day dialogue meeting, with Dr. Odei Mantey and Dr. Donald Wood of the District of Columbia Public Schools, in Washington D.C.
This was revealed in a press statement, signed by the Registrar of the Methodist University, Mr. J. N. Aryeety.
According to the statement, fifty participants, made up of general and special educators with eight to ten years experience, would be recruited across the nation, to be trained as resource teachers for the Ghana Education Service (GES)
The statement further revealed that these fifty participants, after their training, would go back and train educators in their various regions
"This new breed of teachers will be the forebearers of the inclusion educators," the statement said.
According to Mr. Aryeety, the training was being offered to improve the quality of life of children with special needs in Ghana.
The participants would obtain a Bachelor of Arts in special Education, for four years at the Methodist University, based on their professional experiences.
He explained that the board chose the Methodist University, because of its pioneering role in education in Ghana.
The release further revealed that at the end of each year, course certificates would be issued, with four certificates equalling Bachelor of Arts in Special Education, plus practicum and internship.
