Eritrea: Construction of Water Diversion Scheme in Ruba Laba Significant in Boosting Agricultural Output, Say Members of Shi'eb Farming Community

14 August 2008

She'ib — Reports indicated that the construction of water diversion scheme around Ruba Laba in She'ib sub-zone at a cost of about 80 million Nakfa is expected to play significant role in boosting agricultural output.

The supervisor of the project, Mr. Tesfamariam Gebredingl, said that more than 60% of the task has already been accomplished.

Efforts are also being stepped up to divert stream waters flowing from the highlands for agricultural purposes, and thereby promote irrigation farming on 1,500 hectares. The farming community in the sub-zone is actively engaged in the undertaking.

Moreover, about 12,000 cubic meters of embankments and over 1,000-meter long water catchments have been constructed through campaign in which more than 19,000 farmers took part.
