The past two days have seen heated debate in Parliament on whether or not Islamic courts should be introduced in Tanzania. Admittedly, the contributions have been vigorous, but this should not be necessarily construed as a deep division between the Muslim and Christian MPs.
For more than 40 years since independence, Tanzania has remained a united, cohesive and peaceful country largely because differences over religion have never been allowed to cause disunity or animosity, as the national Constitution is very clear on the freedom of worship.
