Rwanda: Govt Lifts Ban On Health Services Firm

13 August 2008

Nairobi — AAR, a leading health management organisation in the region, has resumed full operations in Kigali after its license was reactivated by Rwandan authorities.

AAR began operations in Rwanda in 2005 but its activities were suspended in November 2006 by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), the industry regulator. AAR then scaled down its operations to cater for close to 3,000 members it had signed up.

Speaking during at a press conference held at Novotel in Kigali on Monday, AAR's Group chief executive officer Jagi Gakunju said: "Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for AAR in Rwanda. Through the consultative period, we remained optimistic that we would be enabled to resume provision of quality healthcare solutions."

Mr Gakunju the company will harness the good working relationship that has been established between AAR and BNR to grow the insurance sector in Rwanda.

He said they would elect a local member to the AAR board in Rwanda.

AAR has over 100,000 members in the region, 40 per cent individuals and 60 per cent corporate members.

AAR's corporate members in Rwanda include World Vision, BCR, Techno Serve, Bear Construction, K.I.S.T and Icon Consortium among others.

Mr Gakunju thanked the Rwandan Ministries of Finance and Commerce, RIEPA, The Rwanda Private Sector Federation, the Kenyan High Commission in Rwanda and the Kenya Rwanda Business Association and AAR members in Rwanda for keeping their faith in the organisation .
