South Africa: Walters Extends Celtic Stay

15 August 2008

Shu-Aib Walters has revealed to KickOff.com that he has extended his stay with Bloemfontein Celtic for a further two years.

The goalkeeper's current deal with Phunya Sele Sele was set to expire at the end of the coming season.

The 26-year-old looked set for a move to Ajax Cape Town during the off season, but the two clubs could not agree on a fee for the former Vasco da Gama stopper, who views the coming season as the one that makes or breaks his international career.

"I am excited and looking forward to the new season. I feel that this is the one that will make or break me. I've been in the PSL for two seasons now, so I know what it's about and there are no more excuses.

"And the Bafana coach, Joel Santana, looks like a man that will reward players if they do well. Thus far, he has stuck with two regular goalkeepers, so I want to excel."

Walters' international ambitions will also be boosted by the arrival of goalkeeper coach Andre Bronkhorst at Celtic.

Bronkhorst has been credited with bringing the best out of Bafana Bafana goalkeepers like Hans Vonk, Calvin Marlin, Moeneeb Josephs, Innocent Mayoyo and André Arendse, so Walters will definitely benefit from his presence.

"I am working hard with Andre [Bronkhorst] and the competition is stiff, but that also brings out the best in the players.

"Celtic have excellent coaching staff and they have done well in acquiring Andre, whose CV speaks for itself, given the goalkeepers he has worked with in the past."
