Kenya: Future is Bright, Kibaki Tells Youth

Nairobi — Young Kenyans can look forward to better days ahead as the government works to fix the economy, President Kibaki said on Saturday.

The government, the President said, is currently investing billions of shillings in infrastructure to make Kenya the most competitive economy in the region and to enable young people access quality and well-paying jobs and start businesses.

"We want our country to be the ICT hub of Africa and the preferred outsourcing destination. This is the reason we are laying emphasis on issues like the fibre-optic cable layout to ensure that our charges are competitive," the Head of State said.

Creative arts

President Kibaki, addressing finalists of this year's Kenya Schools and Colleges National Music Festival who performed during the State Concert at State House, Nairobi, said that the government will also give guidelines to help young people benefit from creative arts.

Twenty-four schools entertained President Kibaki and other guests with colourful performances.

Others were Education Minister Prof Sam Ongeri, Education PS Prof Karega Mutahi, Director of Quality Assurance and Standards Mr Enos Oyaya , Education Secretary Prof George Godia, Equity Bank marketing director Dr Henry Karugu and the Kenya Music Festival chairman Prof Caleb Okumu.

Among the teams that presented items were Nyanza's Sony Sugar Nursery, Bongebo Primary, Uriri Secondary and Ahero Girls.

Rift Valley was represented by Siana Primary, Korongoi Secondary and Kakuma Primary.

Moi Girls High, State Girls and Raechel Raji Paramban represented Nairobi while Mutira Girls, Kangubiri Girls, Joy Town Secondary, Mutira Girls Secondary and Kamirithu Primary carried Central's flag.

Others who presented were Mandera Arid Zone (North Eastern), Pwani Seconadry Tononoka High (Coast), Kari Mwailu Academy and Kilimambogo TTC (Eastern), St Cecilia Misikhu Girls, Chavakali Boys High School and Booker Academy (Western).

Kenyatta University also performed.

President Kibaki said that the government has allocated a total of Sh380 million this financial year to support co-curricular activities in learning institutions.

"We will continue to invest more resources in this very important area which helps to nurture the emotional, psychological and physical growth and development of our children," the President said.
