Kenya: Stolen Copper Wires Recovered

17 August 2008

Nairobi — Police have recovered more than 100 kilogrammes of vandalised Telkom Kenya copper cables at Salgaa trading centre in Nakuru District.

According to the officer in charge of Salgaa Police Post, Sergeant Sarah Rono, the loot was impounded on Saturday from a matatu that was coming from Kericho and heading to Nakuru.

Cases of telephone cable vandalism in Kericho and Nakuru have increased in the past one year and thousands of Telkom Kenya subscribers have been cut off due to the thefts.

Sergeant Rono said a miraa dealer, believed to be involved in the racket, was arrested on the spot.

After interrogating him, it emerged that the cables were vandalised at Kapsoit area in Kericho and were destined for a black market in Nakuru Town.

The cables would have fetched up to Sh100,000. Police said the trader would be arraigned in Molo courts Monday.
