Nairobi — Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) on Sunday demanded a salary increase like that awarded to civil servants.

Knut national chairman George Wesonga, however, said that negotiations for salary increase were going on and was optimistic the talks would bear fruit.

He was speaking at Kipkelion Town Council office in the new Kipkelion District during the Knut branch election where Mr David Bore was elected executive secretary, Mr Kiplangat Koech chairman and Mr Julius Bor branch treasurer.

Once again, Mr Wesonga said that teachers would not sign performance contracts.

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers will only agree to sign performance contracts if their salaries are harmonised with the raised pay for civil servants, officials of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers have said.

At the same time, the Nakuru branch officials led by chairman Arthur Waweru and secretary-general Gakau Mbugua said if their salaries are not harmonised, they will mobilise members to down their tools next month.
