First Division FC AK have shed light on the surprise departure of trusted midfielder Mark McVeigh who has suddenly headed off to fellow Inland Stream campaigners, Mpumalanga Black Aces.
McVeigh's move comes despite the fact that he still had a year remaining on his contract with FC AK.
The England-born midfielder has joined Aces on a one-year deal with an option of another season.
Gene Peterson, FC AK CEO, explains that McVeigh exercised an option that was contained in a clause of his contract.
"We still had a running contract with McVeigh. But what happened is that he had a clause in his contract that stated that he has the right to decide to leave after a year. So he basically exercised that option and there was nothing that we could have done about it.
"We already knew that he would be leaving some two weeks ago just, after the completion of the COSAFA Senior Challenge. In the end we just had to issue the clearance," says Peterson.
McVeigh put up a sterling performance during the regional tournament that was played around the Mpumalnga Province after also having excelled for FC AK during the Play-Offs.
Convincing McVeigh to move was that he was offered a better deal by Aces who got him as a free agent.
Aces co-director Mario Morfou confirms this.
"Mark joins us as a free agent and the deal was completed yesterday. He is scheduled to join the rest of the squad in training today. We are happy to have captured a player of his quality," says Morfou.
