18 August 2008

Kigali — The Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) has made gender balance a priority in approving its final list of Parliamentary candidates with 35 women making it into the 80-candidate list.

The Political Bureau of the RPF Saturday drew its final list of the RPF and its coalition partners.

The list also includes 14 members of the coalition representing six parties which formed a coalition with the RPF. They are PPC, PSR, UDPR, PSP, PDI and PDC.

The most notable absentee from the list is the outgoing president of the lower chamber of Parliament, Mukezamfura Alfred, of PDC.

Familiar faces on the RPF bench in the last parliament have also been dropped. They include Somayire Antoine- one of the longest serving members of the House- Mitsindo Fidel and Bisengimana Elysée.

Dr. Rutijanwa Medard of PSR, who has also been a long-serving member of the House is also absent from the list.

Veteran lawmaker, Kanzayire Bernadette tops the list which also includes outgoing vice Speaker, Polisi Denis and new comer, Dr. Semasaka Gabriel.

Other notable newcomers are the former Minister of Education who was last month replaced as the Rector of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), Emmanuel Mudidi, and the current State Minister in charge of environment, water and mines, Munyanganizi Bikoro.

Parliamentary elections kick-off on September 15.
