Mr. Alex Segbefia, the Campaign Coordinator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana as Nana Akufo -Addo's running mate would brighten the chances of the NDC in the December elections.
He said it would be "wishful thinking" on the part of the NPP to compare the two running mates, Dr. Bawumia of the NPP and the NDC's John Mahama.
Mr. Segbefia said, "I will say that the choice of Dr. Bawumia three months to a general election would not favour the NPP, it could actually be detrimental".
He told a radio station in an interview that the NDC's vice presidential candidate, John Mahama is well known in the country than that of the NPP who is not even known by his own party members, a situation he said would be a big blow to the NPP's chances of retaining power.
The 2008 elections, he said, would be closely contested for, for which reason the choice of a running mate is extremely crucial. It is incumbent on the running mate to make his party's ticket attractive, but "the choice of Dr. Bawumia does not do that, while the choice of Mahama does that for the NDC".
Mr. Segbefia said the NPP needs to spend more time marketing the party's vice presidential candidate, whom, he claimed cannot campaign on his own without the support of the presidential candidate.
The NDC campaign coordinator said "we have a flag-bearer who goes out on his own, no problem, we have a running mate who has demonstrated clearly that he can go out on his own in any region of the country and get the reaction that you would expect even of a presidential candidate."
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was endorsed running mate to Nana Akufo -Addo last Thursday by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP laying to rest months of intense media speculation.
Prof. John Evans Attah Mills, the NDC presidential candidate when contacted by the ADM on Saturday morning for his comments concerning the observations of Mr. Segbefia, said "no, no if it is an NPP issue I won't comment on it."
