Zimbabwe: Man Arrested for Fathering Five Children With Daughter

George Maponga

18 August 2008

Masvingo — A MASVINGO man has been arrested for allegedly fathering five children with his daughter in a long-running incestuous relationship that has left the local community dumb-founded.

Chamunorwa Tazvigwira, of Tazvigwira Village under Chief Mapanzure, is expecting his sixth child from the relationship.

Tazvigwira divorced his wife, Mrs Shamiso Tazvigwira, in  the early 90s following which he reportedly began the incestuous relationship with his first-born daughter, Tawonga Tazvigwira, now 30.

Police yesterday confirmed that the two had five children and were expecting a sixth child.

It could not be established at the time of writing when Tawonga was due to deliver.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Phibion Nyambo yesterday said Tazvigwira was in police custody.

"We are still investigating a case of incest between that man and his daughter. Once we complete our investigations, the suspect will appear in court," said Insp Nyambo.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Tazvigwira had a stormy relationship with his wife, leading to the breakdown of their marriage in the early 1990s.

At the time of their divorce the couple had three children, Tawonga being the eldest.

A few years down the line, Tazvigwira allegedly followed his wife and was given custody of his children and took them back to his home in nearby Mapanzure.

Soon after, Tazvigwira allegedly started having an incestuous relationship with his daughter, culminating in the birth of their first child.

Police said the relationship was so secret that the neighbours - except a few - never smelt a rat.

The matter only came to light when a suspicious neighbour tipped the police when Tazvigwira's daughter fell pregnant with her sixth child.

Police in turn immediately instituted full-scale investigations last week, leading to the unearthing of the incestuous relationship.
