Zimbabwe: Dualisation of JM Nkomo Road Set to Start

18 August 2008

Harare — CONSTRUCTION of the dualised Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Express Road from Harare International Airport up to Enterprise Road is set to start next month following the arrival of 10 road engineers from China.

The engineers are the advance part of the Chinese construction team following an agreement struck between Harare City Council and Augur Investments - a Ukrainian company incorporated in Estonia - for the development of the road.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and Urban Development, Cde Ignatius Chombo, on Thursday met with the Chinese engineers, Augur Investments and Harare City Council officials to iron out "sticking points" and review progress.

Cabinet recently approved a design of the road. There would be toll gates at the entrance to Harare International Airport, a dual carriageway, flyovers at Harare Drive and George Road in Hatfield and another from Dieppe Road in Braeside up to the intersection with Enterprise Road and a walkway at Hatfield Junior School.

The raised motorway, envisaged to fly over the railway station and Mukuvisi River landing at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Enterprise Road, would have a roundabout.

Cde Chombo confirmed that for the next 30 days the engineers would be doing the preliminary work.

Completion of the construction is expected before 2010.

The construction of the link had been on the cards since 1976 when the project was approved, but has been hampered by lack of funds.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications, which is the custodian of all national roads, would superintend the construction work.

Earlier, Harare Mayor Mr Muchadeyi Masunda expressed hope that construction of the road would start soon and be completed before 2010 when South Africa hosts the 2010 World Cup soccer final.

Zimbabwe is expected to host some of the soccer teams and their supporters.
