Zimbabwe: Gala Opens Way for Little-Known Jambo

18 August 2008

Harare — THOSE who attended the Heroesplush Gala in the capital recently must have witnessed a gospel artiste who, despite being new and poorly-dressed, put up a splendid performance leaving people crying for more.

Pint-sized Zepha Jambo's poor costume could not deter her. When she finally got off the stage, people mobbed her like a true star, which is exactly what she is.

The Epworth-based singer stole the heart of one potential financier, Noreen Mutanangira, who expressed interest in providing the artiste and her Light of Life outfit with costumes to use during performances.

But this was the artiste's maiden gala and also her first big show before a capacity crowd and the fact that she was sharing the stage with some of the country's celebrated musicians seemed to have urged her on.

"I was very thrilled by the support that the people gave me considering that it was my first performance at a national gala.

"I thank God because this performance has opened doors for me in the form of one Mrs Noreen Mutanangira who offered to sew for me some outfits and also buy me some shoes to use," she said.

Zepha appeared to be in the dark about the goings-on at the gala after she approached this writer asking about how artistes were being paid.

"I heard some musicians are being paid. Who pays us, and how much do we receive? I don't know anything about payments, I am just in the dark, please assist me," she said.

The Mutoko-born musician started singing during her days in high school where she fell in love with gospel music.

Then she met one promoter, Simbarashe Matumbu, who helped her to record her album Tinokutendai Ishe with the Zimbabwe Music Corporation.

"One leading recording company looked down upon the album for marketing before we opted to take it to Corner Studios who accepted it," she said.

The album carries the hit song Bye Bye that is receiving good airplay on the airwaves.

What makes her music thrilling is its unique and vibrant beat.
