Abuja — Director of Erosion, Flood Control and Coastal Management, Federal Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Baworu Yahaya has said the nation loses about N20 billion annually to flood.
He said in Abuja that government should establish flood early warming system as part of measures to mitigate the damage caused by flood.
Yahaya also stressed the need for the country to strengthen its disaster preparedness capabilities.
He said the ministry planned to install flood early warning communication gadgets in flood prone areas of the country to alert people and protect lives and property.
The director said: "As flooding continues to affect a greater portion of the nation's population, communities with persistent flood problem are at risk of losing lives and property.
"The flood early warning system has the potential of reducing the damage caused by flood."
He said the nation's ability to control damage caused by flood would have salutary effects on the realisation of the seven-point agenda of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's administration.
