The Emir of Kaltungo in Gombe State, Alhaji Saleh Mohammad, has expressed concern over the threat of gully erosion in the area.

Mohammad, who is also the deputy chairman, Gombe Council of Emirs and chiefs, spoke at the weekend in Kaltungo when members of the House of Assembly Committee on Water Resources and Environment visited him.

He told the members that the town was surrounded by hills and, therefore, faced ecological problems, especially erosion.

According to him, the problem was more pronounced during the rainy season, when the rains and waterfalls from mountains create deep gullies in most parts of the town.

Mohammed said the federal government's drainage project in the area was abandoned many years ago.

He, therefore, appealed to the lawmakers to make a case for the completion of the project and the construction of additional ones.

The committee Chairman, Malam Saidu Malala, told the emir that they were in Kaltungo to assess the erosion problem in the area.

He said the visit was sequel to a motion by the member representing Kaltungo East, Mr Sule Dauda, calling for urgent measures to address the problem.

He promised that the committee would make a strong case for measures to be taken to address the problem.

Dauda had, in his motion, said Poshiya, Kale'aya, Termana, Baganje, Sabonlayi and Poshereng areas of Kaltungo town were seriously threatened by gully erosion.
