Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema Metropolis have hailed the selection of Dr. Mahamadou Bawumia, a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) as the running mate of flag bearer of the party, Nana Akufo Addo, for the 2008 general elections.
According to the party members, the two make a perfect combination for the daunting task ahead of them, because Dr. Bawumia brings his youthfulness and technical know-how to complement the political experience of the flag bearer.
All the party's bigwigs and activists that the paper spoke to agreed that Nana could not have made a better choice, because Dr. Bawumia has an enviable CV that the members of the opposition will be envious of.
The secretary to the Tema West Branch of the party, Osei Wusu, said even though he did not know the man until his selection for the big post, he was impressed by his CV and achievements, and has no doubt that his inclusion in Nana's team would better the economy of the country.
He dismissed claims by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that with the selection of Dr. Bawumia, the (NDC) party's quest to wrestle back power in the 2008 election would be very easy.
The Chairman of the Tema East branch of the party, Obeng Fosu, appealed to all supporters of the party who are aggrieved over the selection of Dr. Bawumia, especially those whose candidates were not selected, to remain calm and join forces in the party so as to win the election hands down.
He was, however, not happy about the way the media hyped the running mate selection process.According to him, some media houses even named people who were not under consideration by the party and as a result attracted a lot of attention and unwarranted publicity.
Evans Ashong-Narh, the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) of the party in the Tema East constituency, was optimistic that the selection of Dr. Bawumia would sway majority of the floating voters into the camp of the party, especially those in the business sector of the economy. He also appealed to disgruntled members of the party to close their ranks, because the mandate of the executive committee is to carry out decisions that would be in the best interest of the party, and he believes that is exactly what they have done with the selection of Dr. Bawumia.
