Kampala — UGANDA's U-18 girls basketball team will compete at the Africa Junior Championship in Egypt later this year.
The team stormed the continental show after outwitting Kenya 57-56 in the decisive game of the Zone 5 tournament at Lugogo over the weekend.
The teams had drawn their first game 47-47 to set the stage for the match that produced the zonal qualifiers.
Kenya, determined not to leave the event empty handed, will represent the zone in the boy's event.
The Kenyans beat Burundi 58-49 in the final game of the event that also attracted teams from Sudan. The Kenyans won all their matches.
Uganda's girls made up for the inability by the boys team to live up to the challenge.
The team bowed out of the competition without a win.
Uganda's girls team made a slow start before they steadily stepped up gear with Maureen Amoding scoring a game high 19 points.
The Kenyans tried to contain Amoding and her colleagues but with little effort. Halima Nabusimba complemented Amoding's display with 7 points while Mariam Tamale had five.
Ambrose Tashobya, the president of basketball governing body FUFA commended the girls for their performance.
