Uganda: Charcoal Use Eats Up Sironko Trees

A director in a development association has revealed that most of Sironko's trees cut down are used as fire wood.

The programme director for Foundation of Uganda Christian Youth Development Association (FUCYDA), Mr John Muyombya, said households destroy 65 per cent of the trees in the district.

"Our research has revealed that most of the environment degradation in Sironko is due the fact that households cut down trees as a form of fuel," said Mr Muyombya.

He was speaking to Daily Monitor last week about the FUCYDA orientation programme in the districts of Pallisa, Mbale, Sironko, and Budaka.

Muyombya revealed that besides environmental programmes, FUCYDA will teach residents about food packaging and malaria control.

Other programmes include rural electrification and micro-credit finance.

He said FUCYDA has planned to speed up the Environment sensitisation programme in the districts to help stop the environmental degradation which was moving at an alarming rate.
