Zimbabwe: Three Vehicles Stolen at Gunpoint

19 August 2008

Harare — THREE vehicles, including a haulage truck, were stolen at gunpoint in separate incidents in Harare and Chivhu over the weekend as carjackings resurfaced.

The vehicles - an Isuzu twin cab truck, Nissan Sunny and an ERF haulage truck - have not been recovered and police investigations are underway.

Police said the Isuzu was hijacked at gunpoint in Msasa Park after the owner had stopped at the gate to his house on Saturday night.

He was suddenly confronted by men who were armed with pistols.

They ordered him out of the vehicle, jumped in and drove off at high speed.

A report was made to the police.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday said the Nissan Sunny, registration numbers 606-981L, was stolen in the Chitubu area of Glen Norah last weekend.

"Three suspects approached the owner at Machipisa Shopping Centre at around 8pm under the pretence of hiring him to Glen Norah," he said.

When they reached the Chitubu area, the men suddenly produced knives and ordered the driver to sit at the back, but he refused.

The robbers then assaulted him all over his body before dumping him and getting away with a pair of shoes, a Nokia 6110 cellphone and the vehicle.

In the third incident, the haulage truck, which was towing a trailer, was hijacked in Chivhu in as yet unclear circumstances.

According to police, the truck was driven towards Harare and has not been reco- vered.

Investigations are still in progress.

Recently Harare was being hit by three to four armed robberies or carjackings per week with police suspecting that the culprits could belong to a "super gang" led by hardcore criminals released in January this year pending their appeals.

Police have been assuring the public that they would leave no stone unturned in their efforts to curb violent crime in the city.
