Kenya: Mate Wins Round One of 2008 Johnnie Walker Series

Nairobi — Home player Ephantus Mate beat a field of 60 players to claim the first leg of the 2008/9 Johnnie Walker Golf Series at Nyeri Golf Club over the weekend.He posted 40 points that included 21 points from the back nine to win by three points from Nyari's leading golfer George Kibira and Benjamin Inoti who took the second and third prizes respectively.

Following in fourth place with 36 points was Ndungu Wamburu while Nyahururu's Maina Kigundu was the best guest with 35 and the ladies prize went to Stella Mwangi with 34. Charles Mwaniki and Kimani Bow won the nines on 20 and 19 points.Mate will now lead a team of 10-qualifiers to the Johnnie Walker grand finale to be held next January 2009. The other qualifiers include Daniel Weru, Peter Kanyago, Joshua Kinoti, Mwangi Gathu and Fr. Martin Mwangi. Stella Mwangi made it into the qualification list via a clause that allows the top lady to be included in the event that a lady does not make it into the top 10.At Railway, Gichuru Kamau posted 43 points to claim the overall prize in the Zain BlackBerry Golf Challenge which doubled as a fund-raiser for a construction of a green. Finishing second in the high scoring event was Gakere Njoroge with 42 while Tabitha Ndungu was the best lady with 37 points. Speaking at the prize giving ceremony of the event which attracted 130 players, Zain's Tom Indimuli said that Zain Kenya was happy to be back at Railway.

"On our last visit here, we came here as Celtel, we are now back, bigger and better as Zain," Indimuli said. The event raised over Sh200,000 towards the construction of a new green at the Railway Golf Club.Declined to collect prizeAt Muthaiga, handicap 18 Shreyas Patel on an impressive 42 points won the inaugural Nairobi Water Company tournament. Patel posted 18 points in the first nine before setting the back nine ablaze with 24 points.

Boniface Kariuki was the men's winner with 40-points, beating Steve Gakuo on count-back. Steve Ndichu finished third on 39 points and Regina Biau was the lady winner on 35 points after beating Muthoni Muthiga on countback whilst Kiambu's David Ndirangu took home the guest prize on 39 and Charles Gacheru was second on 37 points.

The Nairobi Water Company CEO, Francis Mugo, was the staff winner but he declined to collect the prize opting instead to give it away to one of the company's business associates with Salim Juzer taking the junior title with 42 points.
