Nigeria: Rivers to Combat Flood

Abuja

19 August 2008

THE Rivers State Ministry of Flood, Erosion and Zonal Management has installed flood monitoring gauges along River Orashi to monitor the rate of flood in the area.Mr Ebiabo Briggs, Director of Flood, Erosion and Coastal Zone Management in the ministry, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the ministry was also involved in monitoring and reporting erosion problems in other upland parts of the state, where erosion menace had become a common feature.

"It is one of the statutory functions of the ministry to monitor flood patterns along our rivers and creeks and their tributaries as well as erosion situation in the state," he said.

Briggs said the ministry had in the recent past, monitored flood in 20 locations across the state, adding that it engaged the services of gauge readers to collect daily reading of data.

He said the data obtained were later analysed by the ministry on monthly basis.

The director said that results from the monitoring were utilised to give advance warning signals to flood-prone communities.

He said the state had not established flood gauging stations since 1992 due to the lack of budgetary allocation and changes in government policy.

"All existing gauges have been damaged as a result of neglect and the lack of replacement," he said.
