Ghana: Climate Change And Maritime Security

19 August 2008

HMS ENDURANCE is undertaking an important deployment to West Africa to highlight the effects of climate change and the importance of maritime security.

The 18-26 August visit of HMS ENDURANCE to Ghana coincides with high level talks under the auspices of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

On 19 August HMS ENDURANCE, in her capacity as a platform for world class climate and ecological research, will host a climate change conference involving British and Ghanaian Governmental and non-Governmental organisations.

On 20 August, HMS ENDURANCE will host a series of seminars aimed at increasing the understanding of the complexities and importance of maritime security in Ghana.

This is a unique opportunity for the Royal Navy to showcase its flexibility and professionalism, and take a leading role in supporting Ghana as it prepares to ensure the future security of its maritime environment.

To support the development of robust maritime security procedures, HMS ENDURANCE will train the Ghanaian Navy at their Sekondi base. Training exercises will cover maritime security, fisheries' protection, boarding, search and rescue and customs procedures.

The ship's crew will also support a charitable community project at the Orphans Cry Orphanage in Takoradi. HMS ENDURANCE will undertake construction work at the orphanage, and entertain the orphans onboard the ship, to improving the cultural understanding of both groups.

Captain Bob Tarrant, Commanding Officer of HMS ENDURANCE described the West African deployment as: "An opportunity for the Royal Navy to interact positively with our West African colleagues and develop in partnership an understanding of the importance of the maritime environment."
