Guinea: Public Affairs Radio Programme Host Attacked Following Death Threats

19 August 2008

On 13 August 2008, Kaleb Kolié, the director of the information on Familia FM, a privately-owned Conakry-based radio station, was attacked by four unidentified assailants, allegedly for criticising the wrongs of Guinean society. Prior to the attack, the journalist had received several death threats on his mobile phone, warning him to discontinue his programme "if (he does not) want to die".

MFWA's correspondent reported that Kolié was seated in his vehicle when two of the assailants approached him on the morning of 13 August and began battering his vehicle with stones and iron bars. Kolié sped off to escape further attack from the assailants, who also attempted to open the car.

Although the motives for the attack are not certain, Kolié associates it with the threats he had been receiving, related to a popular programme he hosts. The programme, "Société Débat", provides a platform for discussing the actions of public and private officials.

If you do not criticsise the society you live in, how can it ever get better?
