Kampala — JULY coffee exports fetched $42.02m (about sh67.2b) from 325,080 60-kg bags, a Uganda Coffee Development Authority monthly report has shown. This was an improvement of 21% in volume and 48% in value compared to last year.
Robusta coffee fetched $36.7m from 289,684 bags, while Arabica fetched $5.3m from 35,398 bags.
The improvement in Robusta quantity was due to improved husbandry practices, which were supported by favourable weather and an improvement in prices on the world market.
"However, the decline in the volume of Arabica is due to the crop cycle following good performance in the last three years."
The volume of Arabica also fell due to seasonal factors because harvesting started earlier.
The volume of Robusta rose from 228,771 bags worth $28m in June to 289,684 bags worth $36.7m in July. The highest price among the robusta grades was 239 cents/kilo for organic robusta followed by washed robusta at 236 cents, which went to the specialty market.
