Kampala — UGANDA Breweries (UBL) has donated over sh7m literature materials to the Sickle Cell Association of Uganda (SAU) towards raising awareness about the disease.
The 21,000 brochures, which will be produced, will be used during the association's countrywide outreach programmes.
While handing over the donation at UBL grounds, Marion Muyobo, UBL's head of corporate relations, said: "The company is pleased to assist SAU whenever it can. We trust that the material will be beneficial in creating awareness about sickle cell."
The brochures will be printed in English and most of the local languages. They will help the association access rural areas, some of which are hard hit by the hereditary condition, which is passed onto the child when both parents have the trait.
"We are grateful to UBL for their constant support over the years, from the establishment of our association to the continual awareness raising campaigns," Ruth Nankanja, the association's chairperson, said.
About 25,000 babies with sickle cell are born in Uganda each year and many die in early childhood. This can be avoided if there is proper diagnosis and management.
