The Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) road safety campaign yesterday received a Shs2.5m cash boost from National Insurance Corporation (NIC).
The campaign due this Saturday is held in memory of Francis Batte Junior, Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot and Kenneth Matovu, who died in a tragic motor accident in Lugazi on their way from Jinja in 2001.
"This year we have not heard of an accident reported at that spot where our colleagues perished. We know NIC cares a lot about people's lives that's why we decided to seek your partnership," Uspa general secretary Ahmed Hussein said at a press conference.
Uspa members will take part in several activities including painting a zebra crossing and refurbishing the monument at the spot where the accident happened.
"The most important thing in life is safety. We need to join hands together and do a very serious campaign," NIC company secretary Akin Reju said before handing over the cheque on behalf of the Managing Director Bola Oso Sanya. "NIC will always cooperate with this association that is passionately committing to saving people's lives," flanked by Toyin Sanyaolu (team leader business development) and Ann Canowira (senior manager private sector), Reju added. Under the theme;
'A seat belt can save life', Uspa will give out stickers to motorists on top of imploring them to drive carefully. City Tyres are co-sponsoring the campaign that will climax with a memorial service at Christ the King Church on August 28.
