Nigeria: Centre Records Over 500 VVF Cases Annually

20 August 2008

No fewer than 500 women suffering from vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) received free medical treatment every year at the Zamfara VVF Centre.

The Director, Dr Saad Idris, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Gusau that the incidence of the disease was, however, dropping.

According to him, the average of 12 VVF cases recorded by the centre weekly, have now gone down to 10.

He attributed this to the state government's health care policy and the increased awareness among women on the need to attend anti-natal clinic.

Contrary to belief,he said prolonged labour rather than early marriage, was responsible for 90 per cent of VVF cases.

Idris, however, said that adequate facilities and free medical treatment for patients had boosted access to treatment.

He said apart from government, an NGO,USAID, has assisted the centre in discharging its responsibilities. (NAN)
