Sokoto — Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has called on the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international agencies to accord priority to developing countries in their global campaign efforts on aid and donations to fight health-related problems.

He also stressed the need for people to embrace immunisation of children against polio and other child-killer diseases, and ensure a bright future for the nation's future leaders.

Wamakko made the call yesterday, while receiving a delegation of WHO and other partner agencies who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Sokoto.

Accroding to him, the state government has constituted a task force committee in its effort to strengthen a renewed campaign against the spread of polio and other killer diseases, which had for years, constituted threat to the survival of young people, particulary those between the ages of one and five years.

"To acheive this noble objective of eradicating the trend among our population, legislators, Ulama and traditional leaders have since been working together in enlightening the public on polio erradication across the state,", he said

He said his administration would continue to pursue the cause effectively by embarking on programmes that would further develop and encourage healthy environment for the survival of children in the state.

While expressing his commitment to the fight against the scourge, Wamakko said the renewed campaign against polio will no doubt go a long way in ensuring a healthy society and the survival of vulnerable children.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Dr Suleiman Adana, said Nigeria has between January and now, recorded no fewer than 578 cases of polio and other killer diseases.

According to him, Sokoto alone accounted for 16 reported cases, adding that WHO, in collaboration with other relevant agencies are working round the clock to tackle its spread globally.
