Nigeria: Zamfara Students Get N280 Million

Gusau — Zamfara State indigenes studying in different tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad have been paid a total of N280 million in monthly scholarship allowances from January to July this year.

Special Adviser to Governor Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi on Students' Matters, Alhaji Ango Umar Bakura, who made this known while fielding questions from journalists in Gusau weekend, said there had been significant increase in the allowances in recent times due to the government's commitment to enhancing the welfare of its students.

He commended Governor Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi's effort in ensuring prompt release of the dues to students, adding that,in the last one year of the present administration, 35 students had been sponsored for higher degrees in different specialised fields overseas, with a total of 250 students of the state origin in different universities abroad.

In another development, the state government has awarded a contract worth N358m for the construction of a modern lecture hall and standard library at the Zamfara State College of Arts and Science (ZACAS) in Gusau, the state capital.

Principal of the College Alhaji Shehu Ubaidullahi Kaura said the lecture hall would cost more than N158m, while the library would cost N200m. When completed, each of structures, he said, would have the capacity to accommodate hundreds of students at a time. He added that the contracts are scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.
