Freetown — Assistant inspector general of police in charge of professional standards yesterday confirmed that 12 thatched houses at Balehserah Island in Kambia district were Friday set ablaze by supporters of an independent councilor.

Assistant inspector general of police Tamba Gbekie told journalists in Freetown that the incident was as a result of a meeting that was held by Fallah Suma, All Peoples Congress coordinator on the Island.

"Whilst the meeting was in progress, supporters of the independent candidate councilor Alieu Kanu who won the election felt offended because he was not included in the meeting which was being held in his ward," he said.

He said some of the supporters, relatives and friends of the independent councilor pelted stones and other weapons at those who were in the meeting. "That was what led to the burning down of the houses." Meanwhile, the police have called on the councilor to make a statement and help them with their investigations. So far 10 suspects are in police custody.

Gbekie said some personnel of the general duty and operational service division have been deployed to monitor the situation on the Island.
